Zinc

Zinc

This essential trace mineral is a champion disease fighter and protector of the immune system. It is essential for wound healing where it works with Vitamin C. Mainly concerned with the daily absorption of vitamins, zinc helps the digestive system and is especially important in the breaking down of alcohol. It may also play a part in protecting the body against cancer and in healing ailments such as gastric ulcers, certain eye diseases, atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Zinc may help to prevent and treat infertility and may help prevent and shorten colds, treat acne, and cold sores, and reduce body odour.

Functions:

Occurs in more than 90 enzymes in the body. It has a role in the production of protein in the body and is important for normal sexual development, wound healing and growth.

Deficiencies:

Not uncommon in Western countries, zinc deficiencies can cause a loss of taste sensation, slow healing of skin injuries, decreased sperm count and in children, a failure to grow normally. Indeed, extreme cases have been known to cause dwarfism. Heavy drinkers are particularly prone to zinc deficiencies.

Sources:

Red meat is an important source of zinc, along with cereals, milk and vegetables, especially cassava, peas, garlic and spinach, also making a contribution.

Interestingly:

The aphrodisiacal nature of oysters is well-known, whether this quality comes from their shape or their zinc content is debatable - perhaps its both!

RDI:

Adults 12-16 mg.
