What you can and can't compost
 

When it comes to composting, there are some basic rules about what you should and shouldn't put in your compost heap:

 

Can

  • Vegetable and fruit peelings
  • Paper and cardboard (shredded)
  • Small prunings
  • Flowers, grass clippings and leaves
  • Egg shells (crushed)
  • Used potting mix
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Wood ash (layer)

Can't

  • Meat and bones
  • Dairy products
  • Large branches
  • Diseased plants and weeds
  • Magazines and bleached paper
  • Pet droppings
